Grand Warden Overview

The Grand Warden arrived with the Town Hall 11 update on December 10, 2015, making him the third Home Village Hero added to Clash of Clans. The modern unlock order is different: Hero Hall progression now places the Minion Prince ahead of him, so the Grand Warden is currently the fourth Hero unlocked.

His role is support rather than brute force. He is a ranged single-target Hero with a 7-tile attack range, can be switched between Ground Mode and Air Mode for attacks, and follows the part of your army that carries the greatest troop weight. On defense he fights in Ground Mode around his Hero Banner.

The Warden upgrades with Elixir, not Dark Elixir. His low personal hitpoints and modest damage are balanced by long range, army-wide support and some of the most important Hero Equipment effects in the game.

Grand Warden Equipment: All Hero Equipment

When attacking, the Grand Warden can equip two pieces of Hero Equipment. He does not use Hero Equipment while defending. Eternal Tome and Life Gem are available when he is unlocked; Rage Gem and Healing Tome are unlocked through Blacksmith progression, while Fireball, Lavaloon Puppet and Heroic Torch are Epic equipment.

Equipment choice should match the army. Smash attacks often value invulnerability or healing, Warden Charges can lean into damage, and specialized air armies can make strong use of his long-range support from Air Mode.

CommonActive
Grand Warden Eternal Tome Hero Equipment

Eternal Tome

Makes the Grand Warden and nearby friendly units immune to damage for several seconds. It is the classic protection tool for a core push or a dangerous Town Hall explosion.

CommonPassive
Grand Warden Life Gem Hero Equipment

Life Gem

Raises the health and maximum health of nearby attacking units by a percentage up to its cap, while also improving the Warden’s own damage and max health.

CommonPassive
Grand Warden Rage Gem Hero Equipment

Rage Gem

Boosts the damage or healing of nearby attacking units. Its passive stats also improve the Grand Warden’s damage and attack speed.

CommonActive
Grand Warden Healing Tome Hero Equipment

Healing Tome

Heals the Grand Warden and friendly units inside his radius over time. Its passive stat bonus increases his maximum health.

EpicActive
Grand Warden Fireball Hero Equipment

Fireball

Launches a powerful fireball at the nearest defense and damages a large area. It is used for high-destruction setups and Warden Charge plans.

EpicActive
Grand Warden Lavaloon Puppet Hero Equipment

Lavaloon Puppet

Summons Lavaloons to reinforce the attack. Its passive bonuses increase the Grand Warden’s damage and maximum health.

EpicActive
Grand Warden Heroic Torch Hero Equipment

Heroic Torch

Grants nearby troops damage resistance, extra movement speed and the ability to pass through walls for the effect duration, while boosting the Warden’s own stats.

Useful Grand Warden equipment pairings

  • Eternal Tome + Healing Tome: protection followed by sustained healing for many core pushes.
  • Eternal Tome + Rage Gem: strong for armies that want invulnerability and higher damage through the core.
  • Eternal Tome + Fireball: combines army protection with a high-damage strike for specialized attacks.
  • Rage Gem + Healing Tome: trades invulnerability for continuous damage support and healing.
  • Rage Gem + Fireball: a damage-first setup commonly suited to Warden Charge concepts.

How to Attack with the Grand Warden

The Grand Warden is a support specialist. His own health and damage are lower than front-line Heroes, so he normally works best behind tanks or the main body of an army rather than leading the push. His long range lets him contribute without standing directly in the heaviest fire.

Choose Ground or Air Mode to Match the Army

Use Ground Mode with ground-heavy armies and Air Mode with air armies. Air Mode keeps him away from ground-only defenses, but it also exposes him to Seeking Air Mines. When he is flying without enough nearby air troops to absorb traps, a Seeking Air Mine can be a serious threat.

Time the Ability Around the Most Dangerous Damage

Eternal Tome is most valuable when a large part of the army is inside the Warden’s radius. Core defenses, Town Hall weapon damage and the Town Hall’s destruction effect are common timing points. Using the ability earlier can still be correct when the outside of a base contains the attack’s most dangerous damage or when the army is about to split.

His AI Follows the Army

The Warden constantly evaluates nearby friendly troops. His support AI uses a hidden “Warden Weight”: when nearby troop weight is low he can target normally, but once the group reaches the support threshold he follows the building being targeted by the heavier concentration of troops. This is why a well-built funnel for the army also helps keep the Warden on the intended path.

Warden Walks and Pet Choices

A high-level Grand Warden can work with Healers or Druids in a Warden Walk. His 7-tile range allows him to reach many defenses from safer positions, although his lower damage means the walk can be slower than a Queen Walk. Rage Gem can speed up the clear and increase healing output.

Useful pets depend on the plan. Electro Owl naturally fits Air Mode and adds ranged damage; Poison Lizard can add single-target damage; Frosty supplies slowing utility; Unicorn can keep pace and heal him; Diggy can provide stuns when the army is targeting defenses. Angry Jelly is a specialist option when the goal is to make the Warden focus defenses during a Warden Charge.

Do Not Pack the Army Too Tightly

The Warden’s support radius is large enough that troops do not need to stand on top of one another. Over-clumping makes the army more vulnerable to splash damage and can give high-impact defenses better value. Keep the main force close enough to receive support without turning the entire push into one compact target.

How to Defend with the Grand Warden

On defense, the Grand Warden fights in Ground Mode around his Hero Banner. He has lower raw defensive stats than several other Heroes, but his long range allows him to shoot from behind walls and punish troops that remain inside his territory.

Because he is a single-target defender with a slow 1.8-second attack cycle, swarms can reduce his impact. His value rises when the base layout lets him fire while other defenses are already pressuring the same group.

Countering an Enemy Grand Warden

Against an attacking Warden, multi-target Inferno Towers can help pressure the support group behind the front line. Scattershots and Firespitters are also dangerous because they can damage units behind the primary target, where the Warden often travels.

If the attacking Warden is in Air Mode, remember that air traps can become part of the defense. If he is in Ground Mode, his long range still lets him stay behind tanks, so forcing the army through layered splash damage is generally more effective than relying on one defense to reach him.
