Clash of Clans Upgrade Strategy 2026: Best Upgrade Order by Town Hall (COC)

Build faster without weakening your attacks. This COC upgrade guide puts troops, Heroes, equipment, storages and builders in the order that keeps your village moving.

Before you spend a builder: choose your next two upgrades, not just the next one. A long Hero or Laboratory timer is best started when you can leave it running; short upgrades fill the gaps.

The best Clash of Clans upgrade order

Upgrade the parts of your village that let you earn more loot and win more attacks before spending heavily on defences. A stronger army pays for every later upgrade; an early defence only slows down an attacker.

The short version: keep builders busy, prioritise offence, start long Hero upgrades before you log off, and leave short upgrades for the time between. If an upgrade does not improve your attacking power, resource income or next Town Hall requirement, it normally waits.

Universal priority list

  1. Army Camps, Laboratory and Clan Castle. More housing space, stronger troops and a larger donation capacity affect almost every attack.
  2. Offensive unlocks. Upgrade the Barracks, Dark Barracks, Spell Factory, Workshop and pet or Hero systems as soon as they become useful to your army.
  3. Heroes and Hero Equipment. Begin the longest upgrades early. Keep at least one reliable farming or war army available while a Hero is down.
  4. Storages and collectors. Raise storage before a costly upgrade blocks your progress; collectors make a meaningful difference over a full season.
  5. Key defences, traps, walls and cosmetics. Finish these after the attack side is moving. Walls are ideal for spare loot when no builder is free.

Build a working base before spending heavily on walls

Walls are a great use of spare loot, but only after your village can already progress: keep a dependable farming army, enough storage for your next major upgrade and a usable layout while builders are busy. Start wall work early in small batches, then use excess loot between long timers rather than stalling your Laboratory, offence or Hero upgrades.

COC upgrade strategy by Town Hall

Town Hall rangeBuild firstKeep movingDo not rush first
TH2–TH6Army Camps, Laboratory, Barracks and storagesOne simple farming army and every builderWalls before camps or troops
TH7–TH9Spells, Dark Barracks, Clan Castle and Hero levelsDragons or your strongest farming armyExpensive point defences while your Lab is behind
TH10–TH12Clan Castle, Workshop, camps, Laboratory and HeroesSiege support, spells and a complete attack armyNew defence levels before troop and spell levels
TH13–TH15Offence buildings, Heroes, pets and priority equipmentOne war army plus one low-cost farming armyTaking every Hero down at the same time during war
TH16–TH18New offensive capacity, Heroes, pets and core army levelsBuilder availability for long upgrades and season boostsShort cosmetic upgrades that strand a builder before a long timer

There is no single perfect list for every player. A farming account can push camps, troops and collectors aggressively; a serious war account should keep its main army, key spells and Heroes closer to its current Town Hall cap.

Heroes, pets and equipment: the high-value upgrades

Hero levels compound: the level itself helps every attack, and it can unlock a stronger ability threshold. Put a long Hero upgrade on before an overnight break or before a period when you will not need that Hero. If you are in back-to-back wars, use the time to improve troops, spells, pets, equipment and defences instead.

Do not spread Ore across every equipment piece. Upgrade the equipment you actually use with your main army first, then build a second loadout for another attack style. The Hero Max Levels by Town Hall guide helps you see which Heroes are worth planning around at each Town Hall.

Helpful rule for Hero downtime

For casual play, cycling one Hero at a time preserves a usable army. For focused progress, taking multiple Heroes down can be efficient—but only when you do not need them for an important war or Legend League push.

Should you rush your Town Hall?

Strategic rushing is not the same as randomly upgrading your Town Hall. It means you move up after securing the offence, storage and resource tools needed to function at the next level. You gain access to stronger farming options and more builders’ work, but you accept that your defences will be lighter for a while.

  • Rush if: you can keep a strong farming army, your storages are adequate, your Laboratory is actively working, and the next Town Hall unlock changes your progress.
  • Pause if: your farming army cannot earn enough loot, your core spells are weak, you are constantly short of storage, or you want to stay competitive in regular wars.
  • Never ignore: Army Camps, the Laboratory, Clan Castle capacity and a way to earn Dark Elixir or the resources your main upgrades need.

Five upgrade mistakes that waste time

  1. Letting builders sit idle while waiting for the ‘perfect’ upgrade.
  2. Maxing every wall before an offensive unlock or Laboratory level.
  3. Starting all Heroes at once just before a war or ranked push.
  4. Buying or upgrading equipment that does not fit your current army.
  5. Ignoring the resource cost of your next long upgrade until the builder becomes free.

Use the gaps between long timers for traps, smaller defences and walls. That is how a village stays efficient without turning the game into a checklist.

Clash of Clans upgrade order FAQ

What should I upgrade first at a new Town Hall?

Start with Army Camps, the Laboratory, Clan Castle capacity, storages and the buildings that unlock your preferred army. Then begin the longest Hero or pet upgrades when your schedule allows.

Should I max my base before upgrading Town Hall?

Not always. Maxing makes sense for players who value war weight and a balanced village. Strategic rushing can be faster when you keep offence, storage and resource generation healthy.

Is COC upgrade strategy different for farming and war?

Yes. Farming players can prioritise resource-friendly armies and builder efficiency. War players should keep a dependable army, spells and key Heroes available for the wars that matter.

Balance changes can alter the best upgrade path. Check the official Clash of Clans news after a major update, then adjust your next builder cycle.
